Redcar Central Station is a Grade II Listed building that was built in the 1860s and functioned as a railway station and train shed until the 1980s. Following that, it was converted into the Redcar Station Business Centre, which operated until its closure in 2013, after which the building fell into disuse and disrepair.
The council have identified the building as another key area of urban regeneration masterplan for the town. Redcar and Cleveland Council commissioned HL to design a scheme and undertake the conservation of the existing building. Part of the brief is to bring the building back into life and reinstate it as a key destination for daily use. The project involves transforming both the exterior and interior of the station, modernizing travel facilities to include ticket machines, travel information, and waiting areas, as well as creating commercial and retail units on the ground floor.
Additionally, it was crucial to incorporate sustainable technologies, such , south-facing solar panels, fabric insulation, and new weatherproofing. These measures aim to enhance the station’s overall environmental performance and reduce its carbon footprint.
